New Hampshire paper: Romney 'must be stopped'

Posted by BlognThings in

The Concord Monitor editorial slammed the GOP presidential candidate for flip-flopping on issues but also criticized him on his central-casting appearance.

With "an athletic build, ramrod posture, Reaganesque hair, a charismatic speaking style and a crisp dark suit" along with "a beautiful wife and family, a wildly successful business career and just enough executive government experience" Romney espouses "some old GOP bromides -- spending cuts and lower taxes -- plus some new positions for 2008: anti-immigrant rhetoric and a focus on faith," the editorial says.

But Romney's record makes him "a disquieting figure who sure looks like the next president and most surely must be stopped," the editorial added. The Monitor's editorial page is considered liberal.

Dallas Morning News endorses Huckabee, Obama

Posted by BlognThings in

DALLAS (Reuters) - The Dallas Morning News on Sunday endorsed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for the Republican nomination for president and Sen. Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee, saying both took a fresh approach.

Huckabee, a folksy former Baptist preacher, has had a meteoric rise in opinion polls in recent weeks, largely because he has connected with the Republican Party's influential evangelical wing.

This puts him in serious contention with less than two weeks before the January 3 nomination battle in Iowa, which starts the state-by-state process to pick the Republican and Democratic candidates for November's presidential election.

"Mr. Huckabee is not an ideal candidate ... His religious conservatism, particularly his past rhetoric on women and gays, can be alarming," the paper said in the first of twin editorials under the headline "We Recommend."

"But religious conservatives aren't easily pigeonholed ... Mr. Huckabee has a stout heart for working families and the poor," it said.

iPhone users raise network hopes

Buyers of Apple’s iPhone have turned out to be voracious users of electronic mail and other data services, giving network operators hope that the much-hyped device will finally unlock billions of dollars in mobile advertising revenue.

After years of false dawns for operators, the use of mobile phones for web surfing is on the verge of becoming widespread in Europe and the US, and iPhone research by O2 shows the device is acting as an important catalyst for such activity.

Matthew Key, who becomes chief executive of O2 Europe next month, told the Financial Times that 60 per cent of the company’s iPhone customers in the UK were sending or receiving more than 25 megabytes of data a month, the equivalent of 7,500 e-mails without attachments or 25 YouTube videos.

By comparison, less than 2 per cent of O2’s other UK customers on monthly payment contracts use more than 25MB a month.

A new Web 2.0 iPhone service has been introduced in Germany, which shows what pharmacies are open during Christmas and a map of how to get there.

The new service details Christmas opening times and locations for nearly all of the 21000 pharmacies in Germany. The service is offered by Apotheken.de, one of the biggest German-language pharmacy websites.

Opening the website prompts the user to enter their postcode, which then returns a choice of nearby pharmacies displayed, together with directions, using Google Maps.

Ron Paul: GOP contender will not rule out third-party run

Posted by BlognThings in

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Texas Rep. Ron Paul refused to rule out a third party bid Sunday if he fails to win the Republican Party presidential nomination.

When Tim Russert of NBC’s 'Meet the Press' asked the Texas congressman if he’d consider an independent bid, he replied: "I have no intention of doing that."

When pressed by Russert to state unequivocally that he would not, Paul demurred. "I deserve one weasel now and then, Tim!"

Paul lost to Phil Gramm in the 1984 Texas Republican primary for the U.S. Senate. Four years later, he ran for president as the Libertarian Party nominee.

The Republican presidential contender — who has an intensely loyal national following — is pulling in record fundraising sums, prompting speculation that he may continue his White House bid even if he does not fare well among Republican primary voters.

Paul is currently averaging single-digit showings in most recent surveys of GOP voters nationally and in early-voting states.

iRobot rival succumbs in court battles

Posted by BlognThings in

Established defense contractor iRobot has prevailed in courtroom battles against Robotic FX, effectively gaining an unconditional surrender from the upstart military-industrial wannabe.
iRobot and soldiers

Late on Friday, Burlington, Mass.-based iRobot said that two federal courts had ruled in its favor. The U.S. District Court in Massachusetts determined that Robotic FX and founder Jameel Ahed--a former iRobot employee--had misused trade secrets belonging to iRobot, while the U.S. District Court in Northern Alabama determined that Robotic FX had deliberately infringed on patents.

As if that weren't enough, a related settlement requires the disbanding of Robotic FX, with certain assets to be retained by iRobot, and the banning of Ahed from competitive activities in the robotics industry for five years, according to iRobot. As of Sunday morning, the Robotic FX Web site was pointing to an iRobot page.

Jamie Lynn Spears' Hometown Reacts: Residents Respond To Pregnancy News

Louisiana — Wonderful Water, Woodlands and Wildlife ... Britney Spears' Hometown") or in the Britney Spears exhibit at the Kentwood Museum ("Full of Britney memorabilia and much more!").

Naturally, over the years, citizens of the tiny town on the Louisiana/Mississippi border have become increasingly protective of their most famous export ... a level of protection that apparently extends to that export's 16-year-old sister, Jamie Lynn.

Unless you've been living in a cave for the past 72 hours, you're no doubt aware that Jamie Lynn recently announced that she was 12-weeks pregnant, info that was met with equal parts shock and support from her fans and fellow celebs.

Romney blasts McCain on taxes

The Associated Press
December 23. 2007 12:01AM

Taking aim at a rallying John McCain, New Hampshire front-runner Mitt Romney said yesterday in North Conway that his GOP presidential rival had failed "Reagan 101" by twice opposing President Bush's tax cuts.

Romney also sought to turn McCain's well-known maverick streak - a central theme in his campaign ads - against the Arizona senator. McCain's go-it-alone attitude, Romney suggested, will breed more divisiveness in Washington if he wins.

"Anyone who's run something, whether it's a small business or a big business, knows that the No. 1 ingredient for success is building a remarkable team of people around you, motivating them, guiding them, insisting on them drawing out their best capacities," Romney told a crowd of more than 100 people at an elementary school.

"I've had occasions to run business, to run the Olympics and to run a state, and you don't do that by yourself," said Romney, a former Massachusetts governor.

Taxes, a major focus in a state without an income tax, drew Romney's attention in his criticism of McCain.

Ron Paul inspires entire operation

Eleven thousand copies of the U.S. Constitution stood piled yesterday in a garage, at the end of a cul-de-sac on White Pine Lane, outside of Manchester. A pickup truck from Long Island with a dozen bullet-hole stickers down its side was parked next to them. In the back was bathroom tissue, reams of paper and two dozen air mattresses.

"We need to buy coffee, frozen dinners, eggs, and bread," said Vijay Boyapati, who paid $5,000 to rent the house through Jan. 10. "We're going to need to feed a small army."

Boyapati, 29, is the man behind Operation Live Free or Die, an effort to bring 1,000 people to New Hampshire before the primary, to campaign for Ron Paul, an anti-war conservative running for president who mourns the end of the gold standard, interprets the Constitution literally and wants to put the federal government on a diet. Boyapati discovered the Republican congressman while watching the party's first primary debate last May. Seven months later, he has quit a lucrative job at Google to focus his efforts on the race, renting homes to house volunteers from across the country.

"I want to go all the way to November," he said. "I think we've got a pretty good chance to change things."

New Corvette ZR1 hits 60 mph in 3.7 seconds

This is one mean machine.

General Motors Corp. on Wednesday took the wraps off the much-anticipated 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 -- the fastest production vehicle ever built by GM.

The new 'Vette will be showcased next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It won't come cheap when it hits the market next year: The price tag is expected to be just under $100,000.

The 620-horsepower limited-edition Corvette is based on the performance Z06 Corvette, but better. Under its carbon fiber hood is GM's new LS9 engine -- eight cylinders of pure supercharged power.

The 6.2-liter small block uses a sixth-generation Eaton supercharger to crank out 585 pound-feet of torque. That torque helps the ZR1 fly from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.

MILFORD, N.H. (Dec. 23) - The Concord Monitor broke with political tradition Sunday, telling readers in the state with the first presidential primary why they should not vote for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney instead of whom they should support.

In a scathing anti-endorsement that called Romney a "disquieting figure," the New Hampshire newspaper's editorial board said he looks and acts like a presidential contender but "surely must be stopped" because he lacks the core philosophical beliefs to be a trustworthy president.

Hummer H3 gains a more potent Alpha version

Posted by BlognThings in

After 15 years traveling civilian highways, Hummer is gaining distance from the original war wagon.

Just as Jeep adapted to a post-war world of cul de sacs and leafy suburbs by branching out into varied vehicles, the Hummer brand must find a reason to exist beyond its brutish personality.

From the militaristic AM General original, the brand's current owner, General Motors, derived the H2 with more creature comforts and more GM components. With the original H1 on the way out, GM introduced the H3 in 2006, a smaller vehicle built in Shreveport, La., alongside the Chevrolet Colorado pickup.

Although still unmistakably Hummerous, the H3 is much more approachable, comfortable and maneuverable than its H1 ancestor, sharing a 5-cylinder engine with the Colorado.

Ike Turner Laid To Rest

Posted by BlognThings in

Ike Turner has been laid to rest in California with a suitably rock 'n' roll service in his honor. The musician's funeral on Friday was dubbed "part memorial service, part rock concert" for its crowd-rousing musical contributions and star-studded turn out.

Turner's eight-piece band, the Kings of Rhythm, brought the crowd of hundreds at the Gardena, California service to its feet with renditions of some of the star's greatest hits, including Nutbush City Limits and Proud Mary.

Turner's daughter, Mia Turner, said, "Daddy wouldn't want any of us crying. He would want us to throw a party."

Among those eulogizing the rocker - who died in his sleep at his California home earlier this month, aged 76 - were music producer Phil Spector and rock pioneer Little Richard, who described his friend as "one of the greatest musicians I have ever met in my life."

Jessica Simpson's Movie Made Just $384 on Friday!!!

Posted by BlognThings in

This is quite possibly the biggest bomb of the year!

Jessica Simpson's new film, Blonde Ambition, should have gone direct to DVD. Instead, the stinker got a "vanity run" in 8 theaters in Texas.

Well, as we all know, the people in Texas hate Jessica Simpson these days, and not even fellow Texan Luke Wilson could draw people to the theaters!

Blonde Ambition averaged an embarrassing $48 per screen on Friday for a total box office of $384. Based on an $8 ticket price, that means that 6 people paid to see the movie at each of those theatres, and only 48 people went to see the movie!

That's amazing!

Has any other movie ever performed worse than that??????

Jessica's "star vehicle" will gross just $1,190 this weekend or $149 per location.

Blonde Ambition will be released on DVD in January.

Simpson's next movie, Major Movie Star, is expected to go straight to DVD too.

Merry Christmas!

File this under rumor --- straight from Japan, no less. The Japanese entertainment magazine BARKS claims that a powered-on Nintendo Wii emits a frequency which falls into the range at which cockroaches are attracted.

Now, I haven't noticed any crunching beneath my feet while playing any Wii games, nor have I noticed any uninvited guests at night. Remember this is just a theory (though I have no idea where it came from), and if I were you I'd keep checking Snopes to see if it's been debunked yet (not yet).

Still, this might explain why roaches around the world are reportedly getting better at tennis and bowling.
