Yankees hit with $24M luxury tax bill

BY ROGER RUBIN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

In the world of the Yankees, where anything short of a World Series title is seen as a failure, the 2007 team could be looked at as a $208 million bust.

But that really would be understating it.

After receiving a $24 million luxury tax bill at the end of last week, the Bombers really were a $232 million letdown.

Major League Baseball clubs adopted a team payroll threshold during the collective bargaining sessions in 2002 in an effort to contain costs; each time a team exceeds the league-wide figure, its tax rate increases as punishment.

The Yankees have been over the limit all five seasons and this year paid a 40% tax on all salary above $148 million. That means that when the club gave Roger Clemens a prorated $28 million deal at midseason - that equaled about $18 million in salary - the Bombers actually ended up paying him $25 million for the 18 starts during which he went 6-6 with a 4.18 ERA. Clemens then lasted only 2-1/3 innings in his lone playoff start before being named in the Mitchell Report.

"I can't imagine that was the return they were looking for on that deal," said one executive from another AL club who requested anonymity. "If his postseason - and theirs - had gone better, it might have been a different story."

The archrival Red Sox were over the tax threshold for the fourth straight season, bringing their rate to 40% as well. They owed $6 million on their team salary of $163 million. The Angels were the only other team over the limit - a first for the franchise - and owed $927,000. The bills are to be paid by the end of January.

Giants: We want to beat Patriots

BY RALPH VACCHIANO
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Antonio Pierce and the Giants face the seemingly unstoppable Tom Brady (below) and the Patriots on Saturday.

The Giants have earned a chance to rest their weary bodies Saturday night and guarantee they'll enter the playoffs healthier than they were in either of the last two years. But the players want no part of a weekend vacation.

They want their shot at the NFL's only remaining undefeated team.

"Personally I would like to ruin it for them," said center Shaun O'Hara. "Let's do it. We're playing at home and we haven't played our best football at home. So I think it would be a great send-off."

It would be more than that. It would be historic if the Giants (10-5) are able to beat the 15-0 New England Patriots at Giants Stadium on Saturday night. The Pats are trying to become the first team to go undefeated since the 1972 Miami Dolphins, and the Giants are the only regular-season speed bump left in their way.

But the question Tom Coughlin has to ponder this week is: What's more important, history or the playoffs? The game is meaningless to the Giants, who have locked up the fifth seed in the NFC and a wild-card playoff game in Tampa. Nothing can happen this weekend to change that.

Top 10 Startups to Watch In 2008

A web startup that checks your DNA for predisposition to a spectrum of disease - and finds you a date (23andMe); a GPS system that can thread its way around traffic (Dash); A P2P download service that may revolutionize online video (BitTorrent); social networking designed for the workplace (LinkedIn); they're among the top ten startups worth watching in 2008, according to Wired. • There's a frenzy of startup activity, despite all the grim talk of tight credit, tighter belts and a risk of recession. Wired says it's actually a good time to launch because there's plenty of techbiz capital about. Other companies to watch include:

* AdMob - a mobile advertising play
* 37 Signals - business software

Violence as Kenyan Vote Nears

Posted by BlognThings in

Kenya's presidential election remains too close to call with 48 hours to go, writes the Mail and Guardian. President Mwai Kibaki is seeking a second term but facing a stiff challenge from former ally Raila Odinga for the leadership of East Africa's bellwether nation. Yesterday police fired teargas at supporters of the two camps who began hurling stones at each other in downtown Nairobi. • Kibaki is a member of the Kikuyu ethnic group, which is dominant in Kenya, but Odinga is rallying minority groups together to present a united front. As the New York Times writes, however, electoral law might result in a surprising stalemate: Odinga stands to lose his own seat in Parliament, while Kibaki might not clear a regional hurdle. That would make both candidates ineligible to be president and plunge the country into disarray.

Will Smith Too Jiggy With Hitler, Say Irate Jews

Posted by BlognThings in

Will Smith finds himself in some hot water with the Jewish Defense League after telling a Scottish newspaper that Hitler didn't mean to do evil, but rather, using "a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was 'good.'" The JDL denounced Smith's remark as "ignorant, detestable, and offensive," while the not-so-Fresh Prince quickly backtracked on the "ludicrous misinterpretation," TMZ reports. • Smith's words "spit on the memory of every person murdered by the Nazis," railed the JDL, which called on movie theaters to yank Smith's latest flick, I Am Legend. In response, Smith issued a statement clarifying his position on Hitler as a "vile, heinous, vicious killer."

Holiday Jewelry Sales Surge for Online Luxury Retailer JRDunn.com

Posted by BlognThings in

Lighthouse Point, FL (PRWEB) December 24, 2007 -- JRDunn.com is pleased to announce a 61% increase in the number of orders shipped over last year for the month of December. The company saw strong growth across the board in all categories and is particularly pleased with the increase in demand for loose diamonds.

"As a whole, our company has not lost how important the diamond and bridal business is for jewelers. There are a lot of brick and mortar stores out there that are giving up on the engagement ring business due to fierce competition," says Sean Dunn, founder of JRDunn.com. "We refuse to go down that route. We know the diamond business is where we make new clients and if you do your job right they'll come back and shop with you for the Holidays. And thankfully, that is exactly what happened."

While the privately held company declines to provide exact sales volume, management said their increase over 2006 was "sizable and seven figures". Company executives went on to state that they expect to capture more market share in 2008 with continued double digit sales increases.

In addition to loose diamonds, JRDunn.com showcases over 30 designer jewelry brands on its website at www.jrdunn.com. Top brands include Tacori, Scott Kay, Roberto Coin and John Hardy. JRDunn.com offers clients the unique ability to shop top name brand designer engagement rings and purchase competitively priced certified diamonds without the traditional retail markup. Victoria and David Beckham are jetting out of Los Angeles this Christmas - to spend the festive holiday with family in their native England. The couple moved to the west coast of America in July following David's multi-million dollar move to soccer team LA Galaxy, but they couldn't imagine being anywhere other than London over Christmas.

David says, "We are going to be back in England. I love being back in England, I love being in London; it is where I am from and where Victoria is from. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without being back here."

Nokia Wins Big on Luxe Phones

Posted by BlognThings in

Nokia is enjoying increasing success with its Vertu subsidiary, a maker of luxury cellphones, as a super expensive phone becomes a status symbol for the mega-rich. Der Spiegel reports that Vertu phones, which come diamond- or gold-encrusted, make the iPhone look absolutely pedestrian with a price range from $6,500 to $72,500. Sales of the deluxe handsets are up 120% this year. • That’s on top of a 140% rise last year based on sales growth in Russia, China, and the Middle East, as emerging market moguls embrace the high life. And developing countries are not alone: 2007 sales in the US are up 200%. "From what we've seen, the creation of a multibillion-dollar market in luxury phones over the next few years is very possible," says Vertu's president.
