Jackie Chan releases new Olympic album

Posted by BlognThings in ,

BEIJING—One day before the Beijing Olympics opening, Jackie Chan released an official Olympic album and became the only male singer authorized to do so.
The “Official Album for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games - Jackie Chan’s Version” is one of the two solo albums with authorization granted by the Beijing Olympics organizing committee, reported Sina.com.cn. The Web site broadcasted the launch ceremony at the Olympic Park on Thursday.
The other record to be released soon is by songstress Tan Jing, according to Yu Binghan, who produced both albums.
Chan’s album includes 10 songs he sang for the “Official Album for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games,” a star-studded compilation released on April 30. Tracks include “We Are Ready” and “Welcome to Beijing.” “The album is an extension of the official compilation,” Yu Binghan told Sina. “We chose Jackie because he is the best-known Chinese celebrity, and also because he has done a lot for the Olympics.”
Chan received his Olympic volunteer certificate from the organizing committee on August 3 at the inauguration ceremony for China Story, a project promoting Chinese culture and for which he and Tan Jing will together sing the theme song. He is also set to promote Chinese culture to foreign broadcasters during the games, Sina reported.
Chan wore sports clothes to his album’s launch ceremony, and said the garments were one of the 101 sets that he has had custom made for Olympic occasions. Each set is printed with Olympic rings and features different Chinese characters. The one he wore Thursday reads “Peace” and “Friendship.”
He said that he would put the costumes up for auction after the Olympics and donate the proceeds to charity. Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan has become the top volunteer star serving the Beijing Olympic Games, according to the website of the Games organizers.
Chan was presented with the volunteer certificate by the Games organizers on Sunday at the launching ceremony of the China Story, a project aiming to promote Chinese culture during the Olympics.
The actor will partner with mainland songstress Tan Jing to sing the theme song for the project, which is sponsored by the Beijing Olympics organizers, BOCOG.
Organizers have built temporary exhibition rooms at the National Stadium to showcase Chinese folk art works and intangible cultural heritages collected from across the country for the Olympics. Jackie Chan said he will solicit his friends to fund the permanent operation of the exhibition after the Games, in a bid to promote Chinese traditions.

Comedian/Actor Bernie Mac has Passed away at age 50(R.I.P.)

Posted by BlognThings in ,

"Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital," his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

Recently, Mac's brand of comedy caught him flack when he was heckled during a surprise appearance at a July fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate and fellow Chicagoan Barack Obama.

Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine, Mac joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language. The performance earned him a rebuke from Obama's campaign.

But despite controversy or difficulties, in his words, Mac was always a performer.

"Wherever I am, I have to play," he said in 2002. "I have to put on a good show."

Hormones might aid Women with Schizophrenia

Posted by BlognThings in ,

Schizophrenia commonly impacts more men than women, and women usually develop symptoms around five years later than men. Thus far, the treatment for both men and women has been the same.

During her psychiatric training, Jayashri Kulkami, MBBS, PhD, spoke with many schizophrenic women who kept telling her "It's my hormones, Doc." They also told her "No one takes any notice when I say it's to do with my hormones." Dr. Kulkami took notice and she and her colleagues have now completed a series of small studies which shows that estrogen can have a noticeable effect in reducing symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, and disordered thinking. The findings were from a four-week study of 102 women of childbearing age with diagnosed schizophrenia. Kulkami and her colleagues at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia used a patch containing estradiol, the most common form of estrogen, for half of the women. They continued to take the normal medications prescribed for their illness. The other half also had a patch, but it contained no active medication.

The mom of Paris Hilton calls the ad of McCain a waste of money

Posted by BlognThings in ,

Paris Hilton's mother -- a John McCain donor -- on Sunday dismissed as a "waste of money" a television ad that used her daughter and Britney Spears to portray Democrat Barack Obama as more celebrity icon than chief executive.

Kathy Hilton, the mother of the blond socialite-actress, lambasted the Republican presidential candidate's advertisement in a blog posted on the political Web site Huffington Post (https://www.huffingtonpost.com).

"It is a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign," Hilton wrote.

"It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs. And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States," she wrote.

Immigrant Beaten to death by teenagers

Posted by BlognThings in

Blows had struck the 25-year-old Mexican immigrant with such force that they left a clotted, bruised impression of Jesus Christ on the skin of his chest from the religious medal he wore.

His attackers were white teenagers, including star students and football players, witnesses told police.

After a night of drinking, the teens taunted the undocumented worker with racial epithets, pummeled him to the ground and then kicked him in the head, court documents charge. He died in a hospital two days later.

It took almost two weeks for arrests to be made. But on July 25, Colin J. Walsh, 17, and Brandon J. Piekarsky, 16, were charged as adults with homicide and ethnic intimidation.

Derrick M. Donchak, 18, was charged as an adult with aggravated assault and ethnic intimidation and an unnamed juvenile was also charged with assault. The U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday that its civil rights division has opened a criminal investigation.

Pond Scum becoming new oil?

Posted by BlognThings in ,

The current fuel crunch, driven fundamentally by a rising global demand for oil, has spurred debate among consumers, political leaders, academics and entrepreneurs about plausible alternatives.

A good bit of the discussion has focused on biofuels, commonly defined as energy derived largely from plants and crops like corn, soybeans, switch grass among other sources.

"It's become obvious that the biofuels sector is much more viable now that the prices of oil are high," said Beth Ahner, an expert in biological and environmental engineering at Cornell University.

Algae, thought of as pond scum by many people, is an intriguing biofuel prospect, some researchers and entrepreneurs say.

CNN.com producer Cody McCloy, who's driving across the United States in a biofueled diesel-powered vehicle, is a fan of algae-based fuel, after running it much of the day on Monday during his travels through California.

Huckabee tax plan raises eyebrows in US

Posted by BlognThings in

(adds Huckabee quotes in paragraphs 12-13)

By Ed Stoddard

MANCHESTER, N.H., Jan 6 (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's plan to eliminate all income taxes and replace them with a flat consumption tax has the support of martial arts guru Chuck Norris but few economic analysts.

The former Arkansas governor's victory in the Iowa caucus, which kicked off the presidential nomination process for the November 2008 White House race, will bring his policy proposals under closer scrutiny as the candidates do battle in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday.

Much of the focus has been on the social conservatism of Huckabee, an ordained Baptist preacher who has connected solidly with his party's influential evangelical base.

But some of his supporters have been attracted by his populist tax plan, which calls for an end to all income and payroll taxes. It is the key plank of his economic platform.

"Putting the IRS out of business" has been a common refrain in his speeches in both Iowa and New Hampshire and it always draws some of the most enthusiastic applause.

YouTorrent: Great New BitTorrent Search Engine

Posted by BlognThings in

YouTorrent is “the world’s first real-time torrent comparison search engine” according to the site itself. The site is a meta search engine, which means that it doesn’t host any torrent files itself. It currently searches 12 sources; Mininova, The Pirate Bay, IsoHunt, MyBittorrent, NewTorrents, SuprNova, Monova, Vuze, BitTorrent, LegitTorrents, SeedPeer and BTjunkie.

This list of BitTorrent sites is not extensive, but it covers the three most popular torrent sites. A search for the recently released second part of Steal This Film returns quite a few results which are presented in a clean way. By default the results are ordered by popularity (seeds/peers), but they can be further sorted by date, size, and search engine.

If you can’t find what you were looking for you have the option to check for related and popular searches in the sidebar. At the moment the site has no ads and is pretty fast, but that might change in the future. Overall, for people who like meta search engines, I think that YouTorrent is worth a visit.

Top Military Blogger Dies In Iraq; Read His Final Post

Andrew Olmsted, who also posted here as G'Kar, was killed yesterday in Iraq. Andy gave me a post to publish in the event of his death; the last revisions to it were made in July.

Andy was a wonderful person: decent, honorable, generous, principled, courageous, sweet, and very funny. The world has a horrible hole in it that nothing can fill. I'm glad Andy -- generous as always -- wrote something for me to publish now, since I have no words at all. Beyond: Andy, I will miss you.

My thoughts are with his wife, his parents, and his brother and sister.

What follows is Andy's post: a bit here; the rest below the fold. [UPDATE: I'm adding links to Andy's last post at his Rocky Mountain News blogs, from about a week ago, where friends and family are expressing support in comments; to an article from yesterday that I believe is about his death; and to a post he wrote on his reasons for going to Iraq last June.

John McCain: Let’s Stay In Iraq For “100 Years”!

Posted by BlognThings in

Now Me Personally i think McCain should not win for the simple fact the Bush has already sacrificed thousands of innocent lives to finish his fathers work as he has stated previously and heres the link to this statement: Bush's Statement

At a campaign stop in New Hampshire with booster Holy Joe Lieberman, Republican presidential contender John McCain shows that he has his finger on the pulse of the national mood (2/3 of New Hampshire citizens poll that they want the troops home now) by telling potential voters that he’d like to stay in Iraq for 100 years.

Q: President Bush has talked about our staying in Iraq for 50 years — ” (cut off by McCain)

McCain: “Make it a hundred.”

Q: “Is that …” (cut off)

McCain: “We’ve been in South Korea … we’ve been in Japan for 60 years. We’ve been in South Korea 50 years or so. That would be fine with me. As long as Americans …”

Q: [tries to say something]

McCain: “As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed. That’s fine with me, I hope that would be fine with you, if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where Al Qaeda is training and equipping and recruiting and motivating people every single day.

Oil price at record $100 a barrel

Posted by BlognThings in

Oil has traded at $100 a barrel for the first time.

Violence in Nigeria, Algeria and Pakistan, the weak US dollar and the threat of cold weather have all raised prices after the new year break.

Light sweet crude rose $4.02 to $100 a barrel in New York, prompting a drop in shares and a surge in gold prices.

There are concerns that the high price of oil will stoke inflation at a time when many central banks are trying to cut interest rates to stimulate growth.

US shares had already been hit on Wednesday by figures showing that the manufacturing sector was contracting.

Pet Doberman kills Brooklyn infant

Posted by BlognThings in

A Brooklyn baby was mauled to death Thursday by his family's pet Doberman pinscher as the boy's grandmother looked on helplessly, police said.

Eight-month-old Andrew Stein was lying on a blanket on the living room floor of his family's Windsor Terrace apartment when the dog pounced and clamped its jaws around his tiny head, neighbors said.

Andrew's grandmother, who was baby-sitting, tried to get the dog, Maccabee, off the baby, but it wouldn't let go, neighbors said.

Mike Huckabee Raised Taxes

Posted by BlognThings in

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was introduced on NBC's "Meet the Press" with a bit of bad news. A new MSNBC poll finds him back in second place in Iowa behind Mitt Romney. "Has Mitt Romney said anything that's been untrue about you?" Tim Russert asked. Huckabee replied half-jokingly, "How long do we have on this program today?"
Huckabee listed the areas where he felt Romney's ads had distorted his record, and argued that Romney "left his roads a mess in Massachusetts" and raised taxes by half a million. "Fees," Russert interjected. Huckabee asserted that raising fees had the same effect on the wallet as raising a tax.
Russert point out that some conservative groups had given Huckabee a D or F when it came to raising taxes. Huckabee said he only raised taxes for things that were crucial, like roads and schools. "That's what being a governor is about in some cases," Huckabee replied, and pointed out that he also lowered some taxes. "We untaxed poor people and gave them a shot of making it up the economic ladder…I'm proud of the fact that we raised teacher pay."

Foreign policy gaffes plague Huckabee

Posted by BlognThings in

PELLA, Iowa (CNN) -- A senior aide to Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee admitted Friday that the former Arkansas governor had "no foreign policy credentials" after his comments reacting to the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto raised questions.

During an event Friday in Pella, Iowa, Huckabee said the crisis sparked by Bhutto's death should lead to a crackdown on illegal immigrants from Pakistan.

The Huckabee official told CNN that when he said that, Huckabee was trying to turn attention away from scrutiny of his foreign policy knowledge.

Huckabee's foreign policy credentials have been under a microscope since the candidate admitted that he was unaware of an intelligence report that Iran had suspended its nuclear weapons program earlier this month.

"In light of what happened in Pakistan yesterday, it's interesting that there are more Pakistanis who have illegally crossed the border than of any other nationality except for those immediately south of our border," Huckabee said Friday.
