TORONTO - Oscar Peterson, whose early talent and speedy fingers made him one of the world's best known jazz pianists, died at age 82.

His death was confirmed by Hazel McCallion, mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, the Toronto suburb where Peterson lived. McCallion told The Associated Press that he died of kidney failure but that she did not know when. The hospital and police refused to comment.

"He's been going downhill in the last few months, slowing up," McCallion said, calling Peterson a "very close friend."

During an illustrious career spanning seven decades, Peterson played with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie. He is also remembered for touring in a trio with Ray Brown on bass and Herb Ellis on guitar in the 1950s.

NEW YORK (AP) — Another Spears baby is reportedly on the way — and it's not Britney's. Jamie Lynn Spears, the 16-year-old "Zoey 101" star and sister of Britney, told OK! magazine that she's pregnant and that the father is her boyfriend, Casey Aldridge.

"It was a shock for both of us, so unexpected," she said. "I was in complete and total shock and so was he."

Spears is 12 weeks along and initially kept the news to herself when she learned of the pregnancy from an at-home test and subsequent doctor visit, she told the celebrity magazine, which hits stands in New York on Wednesday and the rest of the country by Friday.

What message does she want to send to other teens about premarital sex? "I definitely don't think it's something you should do; it's better to wait," she told the magazine. "But I can't be judgmental because it's a position I put myself in."

After she found out from a doctor that she was pregnant, she said, "I took two weeks to myself where I didn't tell anybody."

"Only one of my friends knew because I needed to work out what I would do for myself before I let anyone's opinion affect my decision. Then I told my parents and my friends. I was scared, but I had to do what was right for me," she said.

Spears broke the news to her mother, Lynne, just before Thanksgiving, the magazine reported.

DALLAS - Nobody in the Republican Party believes a candidate as unabashedly religious as Mike Huckabee can win the Oval Office. Oh, ye of little faith, he admonishes.

"We literally labored for months with no recognition but the laughter of the critics and their scorn," the ordained Baptist minister and ex-pastor told the Daily News before a fund-raising dinner here last week. "But we always thought we'd be here. If I really thought I had no chance I would have just said, 'Let's quit killing ourselves.'

"Now we're still killing ourselves," he added, flashing his trademark "Mayberry RFD" grin. "But it's working!"

Eleven days before Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses, the ex-Arkansas governor's faith-based insurgency has stunned the field. Huckabee now leads in Iowa and South Carolina and has vaulted into second place nationally, just behind a sagging Rudy Giuliani.

Although party pros still doubt Huckabee can go all the way, his surge is trouble for Mitt Romney, who's banking on wins in Iowa and New Hampshire five days later to show his Mormon faith won't handicap his claim on the nomination.

"Mike can't win, but he is in the process of becoming a spoiler for Romney," says a senior aide to another GOP contender, with a mix of awe and trepidation.

Romney has launched a furious counterattack, alleging Huckabee pardoned hardened criminals and demanding he apologize for calling President Bush's foreign policy arrogant.

Huckabee is the beneficiary of a GOP electorate largely unenthused with its choices. The vacuum created by late entrant Fred Thompson's dismal showing gave social conservative Huckabee an unexpected opening.

Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani visits Hale House to read 'A Visit From St. Nicholas.'

Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani declared he was cancer-free today, less than a week after a severe headache landed him in the hospital and raised questions about his health.

"I am perfectly healthy. I don't have cancer," the former mayor told reporters after reading "The Night Before Christmas" to children at Hale House in Harlem.

"My PSA has consistently, for seven years, been negligible," said Giuliani, who had prostate cancer in 2000. Levels of PSA, a protein marker in the blood, can indicate disease.

"All those tests came out perfect. I'm very healthy, very strong," he said. "Because it's me - a presidential candidate or whatever - I got more tests than normal."

Giuliani said his doctor would probably provide further details next week. His advisors had him checked out at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis last Wednesday after he suffered a headache en route to New York.

"I feel terrific," he said.

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Hillary Clinton predicted Saturday that just electing her President will cut the price of oil.

When the world hears her commitment at her inauguration about ending American dependence on foreign fuel, Clinton says, oil-pumping countries will lower prices to stifle America's incentive to develop alternative energy.

"I predict to you, the oil-producing countries will drop the price of oil," Clinton said, speaking at the Manchester YWCA. "They will once again assume, once the cost pressure is off, Americans and our political process will recede."

Clinton argued that former President Jimmy Carter in the late 1970s actually started moving in the right direction toward energy independence, but his successor, Ronald Reagan, "dismantled" that work.

"Because costs were low, people didn't care, didn't complain," she said.

She warned that folks shouldn't be grateful now if oil countries cut prices from near $100 a barrel to $60 or $70, and compared it to trying to boil a frog.

"You put him in hot water, it jumps right out, you put him in cold water and turn up the heat - he's a goner," she said. "We've got to figure out how were going to not be the frog in the cold water anymore."

Global revenue from high-end perfumes—those $100 and up—increased only 3% to $18 billion in 2006 and is expected to slow even more this year, reports the Wall Street Journal. That's while sales for other luxury items are on the rise. "All the new perfumes resemble each other too much," says one consumer. • More than 200 "prestige perfumes"—high-end scents that comprise 60% of the market—were introduced in the US in 2006 by makers such as Hermes, Dior, and Gucci, but shoppers' noses were unimpressed. "Perfume with longevity and huge profits has dissipated," says a consultant. It costs up to $50 million to promote a prestige perfume, equivalent to a year's worth of sales for most brands.

Forty years after the U.S. became embroiled in military conflict in Southeast Asia, the U.S. State Department has dispatched an American hip-hop group to bolster its image in a region still recovering from the effects of war.

The Dana Leong Band -- a hip-hop funk group from New York -- has toured Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos this month as part of "The Rhythm Road -- American Music Abroad" program funded by the State Department and administered by Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Wielding the mic at the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia this December, M.C. Baba Israel delivered an "incantation to a brand-new generation" of 300 local children invited by the Embassy to the concert. The fast-paced, English lyrics doubtlessly flew over the heads of the young audience, but the crowd quickly warmed to Israel's percussive booms and beats. In the high-flying realm of public diplomacy, it can help to be a man who makes funny noises.

"People think it's a machine at first," said Israel, describing his beatboxing skills. "They can't believe that all those sounds are coming from a human mouth."

The State Department's global music tours first began during the Cold War under President Dwight Eisenhower, who sent Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and other jazz greats abroad to counter Soviet cultural influence in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Formerly known as the "Jazz Ambassadors" program, "The Rhythm Road" tour series began featuring hip-hop musicians in 2005 in hopes of connecting with younger audiences.

After UCLA moved to 11-1 last Saturday with its 69-54 victory over Michigan, Coach Ben Howland said he was not satisfied with how this season has progressed.

"I'd rather be 12-0," Howland said. "I'd rather we never would have had the injuries to Michael Roll and Darren Collison but the fact is, 11-1 is not all bad. We could have lost to Davidson, we could have won that Texas game."

That 11-1 record was good enough to move the Bruins to fifth in both the Associated Press poll and the ESPN/USA Today's coaches' poll from eighth in both polls last week.

In fact both major polls had the same top 10 with North Carolina, Memphis, Kansas, Washington State and UCLA the top five and Pitt, Michigan State, Georgetown, Texas and Duke next.

USC moved from 25th to 24th in the AP poll and remained unranked in the coaches' poll.

UCLA had been ranked as high as No. 1 in the coaches' poll and No. 2 in AP before losing at home in the final seconds to Texas. After UCLA won Saturday, Howland said he would pay close attention to Saturday evening's game between Texas and Michigan State. UCLA beat the Spartans to win the CBE Classic last month. "It will be an interesting game," Howland said. "I guess I'm rooting for MSU tonight. Go Spartans." And the Spartans did win.

Los Angeles is on track to end the year with fewer than 400 homicides for the first time in nearly four decades -- a hopeful milestone for a city so long associated with gangs, drive-by shootings and sometimes random violence.

With 386 killings recorded as of this morning, the city has experienced one-third the number of homicides it did in 1992. The last year with a comparably low figure was 1970, when Los Angeles had a million fewer residents, guns were far less prevalent and street gangs were a much smaller part of life in urban neighborhoods.

Experts and Los Angeles Police Department officials have offered a wide range of theories for the drop, including the gentrification of once-tough neighborhoods, improved emergency medical care and better policing.

George Beck and his son Charlie -- two generations of LAPD officers -- have seen the full arc of homicides' rise and fall in Los Angeles. Much has changed over the last 37 years in the way police deal with the crime, they said.

George Beck, 83, was an LAPD inspector in 1970 and rose to the rank of deputy chief. Back then, police had little information about what was happening on the streets, and top officials rarely showed up at homicide scenes to lead investigations.

For centuries, humans have mythologized the bluefin tuna, an elite, warmblooded fish that can traverse the Atlantic basin in less than a month and a half and grow to weigh three-quarters of a ton. Romans put bluefin on their coins; Salvador Dali painted them.

Now, researchers are using hard science to prevent the fish from going extinct.

Analyzing facets including chemical markers in the tuna's ear bones and satellite readings generated by tags attached to migrating fish, marine biologists are beginning to decipher how separate bluefin populations travel and spawn. And those distinctions, they say, may help determine whether fishery managers can preserve the Atlantic's remaining giant tuna.

"We know phenomenally more about bluefin now than we did 15 years ago. We know enough to save this species," said Michael Sutton, vice president and director of the Center for the Future of the Oceans at Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. "We don't have the will."

We know Apple was hoping to sell a lot of iPhones this holiday season. What we don’t know — and probably won’t until next month’s Macworld Expo keynote at the earliest — is just how many Apple did sell.

The folks at 9to5Mac think the answer to that last question is “A lot.” With “a lot” specifically totaling about 5 million. 9to5Mac expects that figure to be bandied about during Steve Jobs’ January 15 Expo keynote. As the blog notes, that would put Apple halfway toward its stated goal of 10 million iPhones sold by the end of 2008.

9to5Mac bases that 5 million figure on the word of unnamed insiders, so take the report with however many grains of NaCl you care to use. You’ll remember the doom-and-gloom that surfaced after analysts got ahead of themselves projecting voluminous iPhone sales for the device’s opening weekend and Apple wound up reporting sales of “just” 270,000 phones. So it’s not as if there isn’t the potential for lofty projections to create unrealistic projections if the still-impressive numbers don’t live up to the forecasts.

Microsoft has sued domain name registrar Red Register claiming that it is illegally profiting from Microsoft's trademarks.

In a lawsuit filed in Seattle earlier this month Microsoft alleges that Red Register snatched up 125 domain names, all "confusingly similar to Microsoft's Marks" in order to profit from Web advertising, a practice known as typosquatting and cybersquatting.

Web surfers may be tricked into clicking on ads on these sites "because the person finds it easier to click on the advertisement or hyperlink than to continue searching for the Microsoft site, or because the person mistakenly believes Microsoft has authorized or endorsed the advertisements," the filings state.

Typosquatting is the practice of registering domain names that contain misspellings of trademark terms. Cybersquatting is the registration of a variant of trademark.

Red Register owns domains such as windowslivecare.com, msnmesnger.com, and ageofmathology.com, Microsoft said in court filings.
