What’s the best way to approach women at school?

Posted by BlognThings in

1. Find her when she’s alone. It’s not as creepy as it sounds. You stand a greater chance of meeting her when she’s by herself than with friends. She’ll be more receptive to your charms.

2. Observe something about her. What is she doing? What is she wearing? What is she eating? What’s she reading? Observations lead to conversation.

3. Start talking. Now that you’ve summed her up, talk! Use what you have observed as a starter ( not in a stalker, I - know- your - underwear - color kind of way). Don’t worry about saying the right thing; think less, talk more.

4. Listen. What? Seriously, you need to hear what she’s saying. Her conversation clues you into what you need to say next.

5. Remember, it’s GREAT to meet her. If you know you will see her again, tell her that it was great to meet her. She’ll be thinking about you. If this is a random meeting in a place that you may not see her again for awhile, set up the next meeting. Suggest hanging out or studying together.

Now that you’ve mastered those steps, test ‘em out! Here are three places to get started:

The Cafeteria. What you need to do is walk right over to the table when she’s alone and ask her if you could share the table. After sitting down, look at what’s she’s eating. “Is the meat loaf good?” works. “What’s that smell?” is not so hot.

The Library. This approach is all about the walk-by. You need to find where the girl is sitting… and then walk on by and smile. If she smiles back, make another lap like you are looking for a seat. Then ask her if you can sit down at her table. If you get this far, the rest is easy. Just ask her about what she’s studying, the book she has open, her major. Don’t offer any “pills” to keep her awake, however. That’s not cool.

Your Class. Get to class early and hang outside the room (pretend to be on a call). When she arrives, see where she sits… and go over, smile, look at the seat next to her and ask if anyone is sitting there. From that point, it’s all about small talk. “Did you do the homework?” is a good one. Keep it friendly and simple; you’ll see her again in class. All you’re doing is laying the foundation. Honestly, that’s it. If she starts asking you questions you’re in. She’ll be interested in you if you show interest in her. Ask her to hang out after this happens.

Huckabee tax plan raises eyebrows in US

(adds Huckabee quotes in paragraphs 12-13)

By Ed Stoddard

MANCHESTER, N.H., Jan 6 (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's plan to eliminate all income taxes and replace them with a flat consumption tax has the support of martial arts guru Chuck Norris but few economic analysts.

The former Arkansas governor's victory in the Iowa caucus, which kicked off the presidential nomination process for the November 2008 White House race, will bring his policy proposals under closer scrutiny as the candidates do battle in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday.

Much of the focus has been on the social conservatism of Huckabee, an ordained Baptist preacher who has connected solidly with his party's influential evangelical base.

But some of his supporters have been attracted by his populist tax plan, which calls for an end to all income and payroll taxes. It is the key plank of his economic platform.

"Putting the IRS out of business" has been a common refrain in his speeches in both Iowa and New Hampshire and it always draws some of the most enthusiastic applause.

Jay Leno could face disciplinary action from WGA

Leno, a member of the guild, met Thursday with WGA West President Patric Verrone to discuss his decision to pen his opening segment.

During the meeting, Leno was told that "writing for 'The Tonight Show' constitutes a violation of the [WGA] strike rules,' the WGA said in a statement.
NBC's "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" and ABC's

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" also returned this week without their writers, but the hosts of those shows -- also WGA members -- have not openly defied the union's restrictions about writing during the strike.
"[Leno] was pretty flagrant in saying he wrote his monologue," said Sherry Goldman, a spokeswoman for WGA East. "The other hosts ... found a way around it."
The WGA worked out a deal last week with Worldwide Pants, the production company of CBS's

First look at the unreleased KDE4.0.0

Posted by BlognThings in

KDE 4.0.0 is days away from being released. In this post I show you some pieces of the final look of KDE4.0.0 and mention some of the most anticipated features of this great step forward for the Free software desktop. Let's take a look at the final state of this highly anticipated release.

While some of the most shift-key-challenged KDE personalities have cautioned against too high hopes for KDE4.0.0 and despite it being the very first in a long row of releases: KDE4.0.0 is a very impressive desktop.
As the version number suggests KDE4.0.0 is the very first release since KDE3.0.0 to break binary compatibility with KDE3. Being allowed to burn some bridges is the reason so many new frameworks and large changes have landed in just one release.

YouTorrent: Great New BitTorrent Search Engine

Posted by BlognThings in

YouTorrent is “the world’s first real-time torrent comparison search engine” according to the site itself. The site is a meta search engine, which means that it doesn’t host any torrent files itself. It currently searches 12 sources; Mininova, The Pirate Bay, IsoHunt, MyBittorrent, NewTorrents, SuprNova, Monova, Vuze, BitTorrent, LegitTorrents, SeedPeer and BTjunkie.

This list of BitTorrent sites is not extensive, but it covers the three most popular torrent sites. A search for the recently released second part of Steal This Film returns quite a few results which are presented in a clean way. By default the results are ordered by popularity (seeds/peers), but they can be further sorted by date, size, and search engine.

If you can’t find what you were looking for you have the option to check for related and popular searches in the sidebar. At the moment the site has no ads and is pretty fast, but that might change in the future. Overall, for people who like meta search engines, I think that YouTorrent is worth a visit.

100% of people carry at least one type of pesticide from the air, water or food in their bodies

Posted by BlognThings in

UGR News. A study carried out by researchers from the Department of Radiology and Physical Medicine of the University of Granada, in collaboration with the Escuela Andaluza de Salud Pública, found that 100% of Spaniards analyzed had at least one kind of persistent organic compound (POC´s), substances internationally classified as potentially harmful to one’s health, in their bodies. These substances enter the body trough food, water or even air. All of them tend to accumulate in human adipose tissue and easily enter into the organism through the aforementioned mediums.

The study, conceived by Juan Pedro Arrebola Moreno and directed by professors Piedad Martín Olmedo, Nicolás Olea Serrano and Mariana F. Fernández Cabrera, measured the contamination levels of some persistent organic compounds (POC’s) in a sample of the adult population from two areas, an urban one (Granada capital city) and a semi-rural one (Motril), and intended to find the determining factors associated with such levels: diet, lifestyle, activities or residence.

A total of 387 adults, from both sexes, were volunteers for surgeries in hospitals taking part in the study (Santa Ana de Motril and San Cecilio de Granada hospital). Once the volunteers had given consent, a sample of their human adipose tissue (fat) was taken during surgery and they answered a questionnaire about their place of residence, lifestyle, eating habits and activities throughout their life.

How to Install Wikipedia on Your iPod

Posted by BlognThings in

1. First connect your iPod to your computer and fire up iTunes. Then make sure the box “enabling disk use” is ticked. This is extremely important otherwise you won’t be able to move any files on there. Then close down iTunes.

2. Download the program installation wizard and install. Make sure your iPod is still plugged into your computer as the program installation wizard will automatically detect your iPod presence and install everything directly there.

3. One important thing to remember during installation is that you will be asked if you want to make the Wikipedia your “default system” on your iPod. This means that when you switch on your iPod each time, do you want to see your music menu or the Wikipedia menu? I recommend you say no to making Wikipedia the default view.

4. When the installation is complete, eject your iPod from your computer.

5. Now is the time to see if the installation worked. You need to reboot your iPod which you achieve by holding down the play button and the menu button together at the same time for 5 seconds. You will then see the Apple logo which is the iPod re-booting. When you see the Apple logo, press down the re-wind button for 5 seconds and this kicks in the new Wikipedia section of your iPod.

6. If everything looks OK, you now need to download the huge 1.7 GB Wikipedia file. When it is downloaded, go to your iPod folder on your PC, specifically to “data\encyclopodia\library\” and place the file in there.

7. Again, eject and re-boot the iPod, use the rewind button to go to your Wikipedia section and see if the Wikipedia file works properly.

RIAA: Those CD rips of yours are still "unauthorized"

Posted by BlognThings in

Those MP3 and AAC files that you've ripped from your CD collection are still "unauthorized copies" in the eyes of the recording industry. In a brief filed late last week, the RIAA said that the MP3 files on a PC owned by a file-sharing defendant who had admitted to ripping them himself were "unauthorized copies."

Atlantic v. Howell is a bit unusual because the defendants, husband and wife Jeffrey and Pamela Howell, are defending themselves against the recording industry's lawsuit without the benefit of a lawyer. They were sued by the RIAA in August 2006 after an investigator from SafeNet discovered evidence of file-sharing over the KaZaA network.

The Howells have denied any copyright infringement on their part. In their response to the RIAA's lawsuit, they said that the MP3 files on their PC are and "always have been" for private use. "The files in question are for transfer to portable devices, that is legal for 'fair use,'" reads their response.

This is what $205 Million in cash looks like

Give me a second while I pick my jaw up from off the floor.

The photo above is from a raid in Mexico on the mansion of a very successful drug lord. They seized $205 million dollars in cash along with a bunch of drugs and guns.

Great Flying Spaghetti Monster!

You could get all Scrooge McDuck with that kind of money. At the very least I think I would have slept on it a night or two a week. Who ever said ‘Crime Doesn’t Pay’ obviously hasn’t seen the balance sheet of your average drug cartel.

Xbox 360 sales hit 17.7M

Posted by BlognThings in

Thanks to the holiday season, Xbox 360 worldwide sales have reached 17.7 million units. Last we heard about Xbox 360 sales was back in October when Microsoft reported they've sold 13.4 million units and its gaming division profited for the first time.

Microsoft also mentioned that Halo 3 has sold over 8.1 million copies since its September 25th debut and Mass Effect has sold over 1.6 million copies since its release on November 20th. We last heard about sales for the two games early last month, when it was reported that Halo 3 sold 5 million copies and Mass Effect reached over 1 million copies.

In addition to the two big titles, November NPD data reports that the Xbox 360 has a record-high software attach rate of 6.9.

Due to the surplus sales of the Xbox 360 this holiday, Xbox Live suffered from problems and inpromptu downtimes. But what do you expect for introducing waves of new Xbox 360s to Xbox Live every waking moment?

Top Military Blogger Dies In Iraq; Read His Final Post

Andrew Olmsted, who also posted here as G'Kar, was killed yesterday in Iraq. Andy gave me a post to publish in the event of his death; the last revisions to it were made in July.

Andy was a wonderful person: decent, honorable, generous, principled, courageous, sweet, and very funny. The world has a horrible hole in it that nothing can fill. I'm glad Andy -- generous as always -- wrote something for me to publish now, since I have no words at all. Beyond: Andy, I will miss you.

My thoughts are with his wife, his parents, and his brother and sister.

What follows is Andy's post: a bit here; the rest below the fold. [UPDATE: I'm adding links to Andy's last post at his Rocky Mountain News blogs, from about a week ago, where friends and family are expressing support in comments; to an article from yesterday that I believe is about his death; and to a post he wrote on his reasons for going to Iraq last June.
